BlockBeats news, October 26 - According to Bloomberg, the UK government has announced an investment of £100 million (approximately $134 million) to build an AI biosecurity laboratory, which will receive support from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. This move is part of a series of measures by the UK government aimed at enhancing its understanding and response capabilities regarding AI-related risks. According to a UK government statement, the laboratory will use AI to detect and monitor biological threats. In addition to the aforementioned funding, OpenAI and Anthropic will also provide up to £200 million in AI model usage credits. The laboratory will also collaborate with Google DeepMind and life sciences company Basecamp Research. Furthermore, the UK government has allocated an additional £65 million to develop countermeasures against pathogens. The establishment of this laboratory further clarifies the direction of the UK government's AI strategy: creating specialized agencies outside existing government departments to conduct research, monitoring, and application in various areas of AI technology. The announcement also includes an additional £120 million in funding for the AI Safety Institute. This institution is currently one of the government agencies receiving the largest funding support, primarily responsible for regularly evaluating frontier AI models. Additionally, the UK government will allocate an additional £23 million to the AI Economy Institute, which is under construction and aims to analyze the impact of AI technology on the economy.
