AI and trading
Why use AI to trade crypto
Cirka 7 min
Crypto markets have three properties that set them apart from traditional markets, and it is precisely these properties that let AI add more value here.
Three properties of crypto markets
- Around-the-clock operation: Markets are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is no close. The sharpest moves often happen in the middle of the night.
- Enormous data volume: Hundreds of exchanges, thousands of assets. Prices, orders, and fills update every second.
- Sharp volatility: Major coins can move several percent in a matter of minutes.
No individual can watch a market like this continuously. That is precisely where computer systems excel.
Where AI has an edge
- Scale: Monitors a large number of pairs and exchanges simultaneously, analyzing new data the moment it arrives.
- Discipline: Executes strictly according to its model and rules, without being affected by fear or greed, avoiding the panic-selling and chasing-rallies that hurt most traders.
- Continuous operation: Maintains the same response speed day and night.
- Pattern recognition: Finds price patterns and market states in large amounts of historical data that are difficult for a human eye to detect.
Where AI falls short
- Cannot predict the future: Models learn from historical data. When market structure changes, previously effective patterns can stop working.
- Cannot prevent all surprises: Exchange failures, sudden regulatory shifts, and similar events are rarely predictable in advance.
- Backtests are not live trading: Performance simulated on historical data is typically better than real trading results.
How to think about AI trading
AI is a disciplined, fast, and tireless executor—not an oracle that guarantees profit. Understanding its strengths and limits is how you use it well. Treat any claim of "guaranteed returns" with serious skepticism.
